Can GHDs overheat?

Under certain fault conditions GHD hair straighteners can run a little too hot or overheat enough to trigger the thermal fuse.

So the answer is yes, but they are protected by the thermal fuse.

A thermal fuse must never be bypassed or replaced with one of a higher temperature rating!

It is critical to replace the thermal fuse with the correct value of thermal fuse which also has the correct double insulated protection as the original thermal fuse.

Currently, as far as we can tell, only our after market Thermal Fuse complies with the correct temperature rating and CE certification originally intended by GHD. i.e. the wires must be double insulated and Kapton tape must be applied to all but the element facing surface.
