Whole board gone?

Whole board gone?

Postby nz_lad » 28 Mar 2010, 04:16

First off - thanks for the awesome website, I'm hoping it will save me some $$ as my partner recently came to me distressed as her beloved GHD's had just stopped working - after looking at this site I have opened them up to test the cable and resistors - cable seems all good but I cant get a reading at all on the board with the r8 resistor on it.

I have tried checking ohm resistance and continuity and get nothing on either - would this mean that the whole board is fried?

Any help is appreciated.

cheers

Hi Scotty,

Are you saying that you can't measure 100Ohms across the R8 resistor? If so, replace it and it will probably be fine:

Thanks for the quick reply, but I have checked the resistance on all resistors on the board and I'm not getting anything!

Surely one resistor wouldn't affect all of them?

Hi Scott,

That resistor supplies power to the entire board, so if it's open circuit, then the board is not getting any power and will appear dead.

The other resistors on the board can be quite high resistance - around 1MegOhm, so make sure you have your multimeter on an appropriate scale when you test them.

Thanks again Gary for the reply,

Still no joy getting any readings from the other resistors - my partner has purchased another set of GHD's already (couldnt wait) but I will still look at repairing this set - I went to purchase the resistors from the shop but was put off by the £2 charge for a low order? £6 (about $14 nzd) seems a bit steep for a few resistors delivered?

cheers again for the info.

Hi Scotty,

The extra £2 is a problem I'm having with the shop software at the moment (I recently had to do a upgrade and now I need to do some more work to convince it not to charge the low order fee on international orders). If you order some resistors for £6, I will only take £4 from your account.

Just as a sanity check, do you measure zero ohms when you touch your meter probes together directly?
